What I would ask is who is doing the interviewing and why is their preference in music somehow more evolved? I know it's just a joke, obviously, and it's funny, but it's also a joke that reflects (and perpetuates) a very prevalant bias against supposedly simpler forms of expression.
I like Alanis and lots of other mainstream pop singers, and I rarely listen to music that could be described as refined or cultured. (I've tried to like it, but so far I haven't been able to.)
One of my primary arguments as a literary critic has always been that more complex stylistic expression isn't of necessity more profound expression. Sometimes even the simplest and most common forms of expression can be shown to contain significant depth.
Then there's always the possibility that the depth is already in the reader (or listener), in which case the text is really little more than a pre-text, a spark that ignites a latent complexity derived from hundreds of simple and complex texts and experiences.
De gustibus non est disputandum.

Rs... No it didn't bother me at all :)and I think I even said I realized it was just a joke. But it got me thinking about the old, tired bias against popular culture and its products. I thought it was funny, too. And don't worry, if something bothers me, I'll come right out and say it does, rs..
